In a linear array transducer individual elements are arranged in a linear shape, typically containing 128, 192 or 256 elements. The higher the number of elements, the more complex and powerful the system becomes. By firing groups of transducer elements in sequence, a series of adjacent acoustic beams is generated, each forming a scanline perpendicular to the transducer face or slightly tilted. The active firing elements form the active transmit aperture. These scan lines are combined to form the US image and to compose a given field of view.

Linear array transducers are used for small parts and fine structures in MSK and Radiology, vessels in Cardiovascular, and Interventional applications. The rectangular image format produced by these transducers is particularly well suited for these applications.
